Sprucing up for Spring...

Hey all..

Again sorry my posts have been sporadic.. just on the go a lot lately..

SOOOO this weekend is Mothers Day.. what is everyone going to be doing??
I'm super excited.. My Mom is coming for a weekend visit.. we have some shopping to do for fabric and she is bring me an "On Loan" Sewing machine that I can learn on and get some sewing stuff done..

IVE NEVER REALLY SEWED.. I know Miss.. DIY cant sew..lol.. But that's why momma will be here.. to help me work the machine and teach me the basics.. Good thing I picked a super simple project to start with..

WELL due to my mother being here this weekend Hubby gave me Mothers Day last weekend..
I had said I want to do some gardening and want to do it all with my family..

SO Hubby attempted to make me breakfast in bed.. however I woke up and ruined it.. It was 7:30.. I like to be up at 5:30-6:00 even on the weekends.. so I look at it as I slept in and he should have started earlier..lol.. Anyways it was a nice breakfast.. Followed by taking our son for a haircut..

Then we all headed to Lowe's and I went on a flower box shopping spree..

We had started our boxes last year.. Nothing expensive or fancy.. some black basket brackets with some On sale flower Boxes..lol.. I'm always on a budget...

However this year he let me go crazy and pick out whatever i wanted to fill the boxes with.. Was fun.. to see the different flowers.. see what would go nice together..

We then headed to a local pizza shop and actually sat down in the place and ate for once.. instead of bringing the mess home.. SUPER happy about this.. 


Well the day continued with the kids going down for naps.. I got to work on my flower boxes..

I would like to put a disclaimer out there that I have a VERY black thumb.. however for some reason I can do flower boxes..lol.. I can grow lots of stuff but house plants.. DIE.. DEAD.. NO LONGER LIVING.. I killed a spider plant.. HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN..lol..

well it does.. and its because of me and my black thumb..

i would like to say though.. If you want some outdoor plants.. flower boxes or seedlings.. Its possible.. If i can do this with a black thumb and a budget.. so can you..


Here's what I have done so far this year..

Here was the fruits of my Early Mothers Day Lowe's trip.. the hose and sprinkler were for hubby as he working on turf builder in the back yard..lol..

I purchased not a ton but a good amount of some different plants.. Geraniums, Creeping Jenny, Vinca and the stupid name of the white stuff I cant remember..

ALSO.. i love having potted flowers on my steps but I refused to pay 34$ for one.. so I purchased a clay pot.. a dahlia and the creeping jenny and since I was already using some soil for the boxes I just saved some for the potted dahlia as well..

Here is one of the 3 boxes we have on our front porch.. I know it looks kind of sad now.. but when I re post in a month or so the flowers will have taken over the box.. so full and beautiful.. remember when making your box that you don't need to fill fill fill with plants.. if you have good soil and sunlight the plants will take over the box all on there own.. 

On the outer sides of the box we have Vinca Vine.. very inexpensive and once its full it creeps down over the box.. . next plant in is the one I cant remember the name.. I always call it fuzzy snow plant.. because its semi fuzzy and is why like snow.. THESE really fill up the box so use them lightly in the box.. In the middle we have geraniums.. which I found out AFTER the fact that you have to "Dead Head" them, which basically means pull off the dead flowers if you want it to keep going..

I water them once a day and they are already perked up and growing.. LOVE IT..

This is the dahlia pot I did.. as you can see red dahlias, and the viney overflowing plant is Creeping jenny..

ALLLLL of these flowers are about 2-3$ or under per pot.. NOT BAD at all, the most expensive part of making flower boxes from start to finish is the boxes and brackets.. but as long as you take care of them year after year.. they will last and its generally a one time expense..

Well there you have it.. that's what I have pics of..

I also this year started a wildflower garden.. mainly because all I had to do was drop the seeds.. rake it over and water it.. ITS FILLING up with green.. LOVE IT..

Also we have a nice ugly fence in our backyard.. we live in the city so you can see every ones house, however this one spot.. you can see the back of someones garage and all the wood and scraps they throw between the fence and the garage.. NOT PRETTY..

so for 1$ a packet.. I bought some seeds for REALLY tall plants.. Like Giant Delphiniums, Larkspur and regular delphinium.. CANT WAIT.. everything is planted.. now to water daily and wait for the beauty.. plants and flowers are such an easy way to add beauty to your home, yard or porch.. Even with a black thumb I'm finding its lightening up.. Maybe it will be light green after a few summers of planting..
